In the framework of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU, the European Committee of the Regions and the Walloon Region will jointly organise the 10th European Summit of Regions and Cities in the Belgian city of Mons on 18-19 March 2024.
The European Summit of Regions and Cities is held every two years, where elected representatives of regional and local authorities from across Europe discuss global challenges and jointly define a vision for Europe’s future.
For the 10th edition, the Walloon Region will join the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) in organising the Summit in Mons, which will also celebrate the Committee’s 30th anniversary. CoR’s President Vasco Alves Cordeiro said that the event will be a unique opportunity for all local and regional elected representatives to deliver a vision for the future of Europe and in response to global challenges.
“Cities and regions are the drivers of European democracy….and are key players in the success of the green and digital transition. The Mons Summit will bring together thousands of mayors, city councillors, regional ministers, as well as leading European and global decision-makers. This will be a decisive moment to show the commitment of cities and regions to the future of Europe and our planet.”
Elio Di Rupo, Minister-President of Wallonia, said: “This summit will highlight the pro-European commitment of our region and will also serve to recall the importance of the role of regional and local authorities in bringing citizens closer to the European project. We will address the challenges related to the future of our union, democracy, the future of cohesion policy and the strategic autonomy of the EU.”
