NEW ACCREDITED COURSE ON SPATIAL PLANNING FOR COUNCILLORS

Aug 1, 2025 | Nationwide News

A new 12-week training course in spatial planning for councillors has been launched by the Association of Irish Local Government (AILG), in partnership with Maynooth University, and is due to start on 15 November.

Specifically designed for elected members, the micro-credential course ‘The Planning System in Ireland – An Introduction to Spatial Planning Policy and Practice’ offers councillors a valuable opportunity to build foundational knowledge of the planning system.

According to the AILG, “this is a valuable opportunity for elected members to upgrade their professional and academic knowledge in a complex policy area where councillors play a key role in shaping decisions that directly impact citizens’ lives”.

This NFQ Level 8 programme will equip councillors with the essential tools to critically assess planning decisions in the context of national, regional, and local development priorities.

The course will commence on 15 November 2025 and will be delivered over 12 weeks through a blend of in-person and online sessions (seven sessions in total).

Sessions will cover key themes including:
• The planning system and hierarchy (national to local)
• Balanced regional development
• The councillor’s role in planning
• Evidence-informed policymaking
• Planning and its relationship with housing, transport, and the environment

Key features:
• Hybrid format – a total of seven sessions delivered through a mix of in-person and evening online classes. The sessions will be delivered on a bi-weekly basis.
• Expert-led content aligned with the Planning and Development Act 2024 and revised National Planning Framework (NPF).
• Peer-to-peer learning and networking with fellow elected members across the country.
• Completion of a practical assignment directly linked to your role as a councillor in the planning process.

Course details:
• Award: NFQ Level 8 | Credits: 5 ECTS
• Total cost: €1,270 (including registration)
• Local authorities may cover course fees under the elected members’ training budget.
Refer to Circular LG 03/2025, Part 4, Section B, Paragraph 2(4) for guidance on contributions toward Level 6+ qualifications.
