Kildare and Kilkenny County Councils recently renewed their partnership agreement to lead the Eastern and Midlands Climate Action Regional Office (CARO) for the next six years.
Kildare County Council is the lead authority in the region, supported by Kilkenny County Council, to co-ordinate the delivery of climate action across 17 local authorities, encompassing the border, midlands, mid-east and south-east counties (Carlow, Cavan, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Louth, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, Roscommon, Tipperary, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow). Kildare’s Chief Executive Sonya Kavanagh said that over the previous five years, the partnership with Kilkenny County Council has been instrumental in helping local authorities in the region to respond to climate challenges, particularly on adaptation. “The Eastern and Midlands CARO has become a valued resource for the local authorities within the region,” she added.
Going forward the partnership will continue to help local authorities to deliver climate policies and behavioural change within their own organisations and to empower citizens, businesses and neighbourhoods to better understand the impacts of climate change and to embrace the need for climate action.
The Eastern and Midlands CARO is one of four offices, all established in 2018 to support local government to respond and adapt to climate change. The other three offices are Atlantic Seaboard North CARO, Atlantic Seaboard South CARO and Dublin Metropolitan CARO.
The CARO offices co-ordinate national and local climate policy and work to ensure a more joined-up approach to responding to the climate crisis at a regional level. For further information visit www.caro.ie
