ESB COLLABORATES WITH LOCAL AUTHORITIES ON SHARED EV E-HUBS

May 14, 2025 | Nationwide News

ESB has launched a new project, which has seen the rollout of EV-only eHubs in Malahide, Sandyford Business Park, Swords and Galway.

This purpose built eHubs each include an ESB charge station and two shared EVs available to book at the sites. ESB’s innovation team has collaborated with Fingal County Council and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council to develop transportation options ensuring that electric vehicles are accessible to a broad range of people, while contributing to more sustainable and connected communities.

EVs at each site will be provided by car share operators GoCar and Yuko and will be integrated into the suppliers’ existing car share booking apps, making it easier for users. The eHubs pilot project aims to make shared EVs affordable and accessible, leading the way for greener, more sustainable communities.

Donal Phelan, Head of Innovation at ESB Group, said: “Adopting cleaner technologies and sustainable practices, can greatly reduce the transportation sector’s carbon footprint and make a substantial impact on our journey towards a net zero future.

Cllr Jim O’Leary, Cathaoirleach, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said that the launch of the new electric car share scheme in Sandyford Business District, in partnership with ESB, Go Car, and Yuko, directly supports DLR’s Climate Action Plan 2024-2029.

Cllr Brian McDonagh, Mayor of Fingal, said: “This initiative not only supports sustainable energy solutions but also strengthens the connections within our community, paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future for generations to come.”

ESB has also launched a new pilot project – eHubs – which involves the installation of seven charge stations for shared electric cars, ebikes and ecargo bikes. The aim is to assess if the provision of sustainable shared transport options helps enable the reduction of private car use, traffic congestion, and carbon emissions.

The remaining eHub sites in Dublin, Waterford and Donegal scheduled to become fully operational by this summer. For more information visit: https://esb.ie/ehubs
