EPA PROJECT TO MEASURE AIR POLLUTION IN WATERFORD CITY

Aug 5, 2025 | Nationwide News

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) aims to recruit 400 people in Waterford City to take part in its next ‘Clean Air Together’ project to measure air pollution, following the success of previous citizen science projects in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick cities.

The EPA is leading the ‘Clean Air Together Waterford City’ project, in partnership with Waterford City and County Council, with support from Kilkenny County Council and the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce.

With the participation of 400 citizens across Waterford, the project will measure levels of the traffic-related air pollutant, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), across the city and surrounding areas, with four main objectives:

  • To increase public knowledge and awareness.
  • To help people better understand and take action to improve air quality in their local area.
  • To use the data to help inform EPA air quality modelling.
  • To work collaboratively with stakeholders in support of relevant national policy.

With the project due to launch in Waterford later this month, the EPA is currently accepting expressions of interest from people in the city who wish to participate. Residents within the area of the Waterford city and environs (as shown on the map below) and over 18 years of age, may register their interest to take part in Clean Air Together. Participation is free and no scientific knowledge or expertise is needed to take part.
